The first weekend of the NCAA Tournament is in the books, and there weren't all that many upsets — the Sweet 16 is looking pretty chalky. Sure, Texas is an 11 seed, but ... it's Texas, probably the most resource rich athletics department in the country. In fact, every member of the Sweet 16 comes from the top 5 conferences (football's Power 4 + Big East).
After a pretty good first day, it made for a bit of a boring first couple of rounds. But with the best teams in the country now lined up (14 of the top 17 teams at kenpom.com remain alive), the Sweet 16 and beyond should be fantastic. We’ve got some ideas as to why we’re moving toward more and more predictable early rounds during “March Madness” — and it’s more than just “NIL.”
We also celebrate a couple of former Cougs who are still playing: Dylan Darling and Oscar Cluff, both of whom were a part of WSU’s tournament team two seasons ago. Cluff is the starting center for Purdue, which gets back in action tonight against those Longhorns (4:10 p.m. on CBS if you’re inclined to watch); Darling, of course, etched his name in March lore with this shot for St. John’s:
The Johnnies, by the way, will take on top seeded Duke on Friday.
What does all this separation of the top teams in the NCAA tournament mean for WSU?
After discussing that, we take a glimpse at spring football, which starts today for the Cougs under new coach Kirby Moore.
Plus, beer talk and a brief look at the baseball team.
